hidden talents

As my mom can attest, I tend to think that things I haven't done before are really hard and that I won't be able to do them. Sometimes I'm right, but sometimes I end up being surprised at how easy something is. Take, for instance, housebreaking. I always thought it took some skill to pick locks, but yesterday I was able to break into my house in about 15 seconds.

I think my roommate was right when she said that we should use the deadbolt more often.

I think you're right. I'd want to start using the deadbolt too. The idea that someone could break into your apartment with that little effort is... unnerving.

There's a reason deadbolts exist. I lived in one apartment complex in Provo that had more than its share of girls who forgot their keys (or were inadvertantly locked out by roommates). I got very good at getting their doors open for them. It only ever took between 3 and 6 seconds.

I would guess Kwikset, but there are usually easier ways of getting in than actually picking the lock. Most security is simply there to shift the interest of those so inclined to easier prey. Psychologically it also seems a lot more nefarious to get into a locked house than an unlocked one.

There is basically no stopping somebody determined enough to get in. Most security measures won't survive a little C4 in the right places. The other side of the coin is that most people just aren't that into breaking in to your house.
